In recent years, impressive sequencing and comparative mapping endeavors have made available numerous detailed whole-genome sequences and maps. One of the stated goals of these projects is to better our understanding of modern organisms through comparative analyses. The rationale is that insights into the dynamics of the evolution of genomes can help ascertain the underlying mechanisms influencing these organisms. In fact, studying the similarities between distant genomes can highlight some of their crucial components. It is then reasonable to assume that these crucial components are shared by whole clades of the Tree of Life. The main focus of my group is to explore questions in bioinformatics that can benefit from a comparative perspective. These analyses can be at the coarse whole-genome level but they can also be at the raw sequence level. The topics covered include: comparative genomics, genome rearrangements in evolution, genome rearrangements in cancer and evolution of regulatory sequences.
